A FEW HIP LABRUM ABNORMALITIES ON MRI & CT

HIP LABRUM MRI & CT

There is more to the hip labrum than just Labral tears. Here is a Quick Look at a few Hip Labrum abnormalities from Labral tears, paralabral cysts and mucoid degeneration to Labral ossification.

LABRAL TEAR WITH PARALABRAL CYST

  • This is a paralabral cyst (Pink arrow).

  • Hyperintense on PD Fat Sat and lying adjacent to a torn degenerate labrum (Green arrow).

  • The presence of a paralabral cyst is always an indicator of an underlying labral tear.

HIP LABRUM MUCOID DEGENERATION

  • Coronal PDFS demonstrates hyper-intense, enlarged labrum with small cystic change within it.

  • This is the appearance of Mucoid degeneration of the labrum.

  • Look for hyperintensity and enlargement of the labrum +/- cyst.

HIP LABRUM TEAR & PARALABRAL CYST

  • Labral tear (Pink arrow) is seen as a high signal cleft at the base of the labrum.

  • Paralabral cysts (Blue arrow) are usually continuous with the tear but may also track away from the tear and the neck communicating with the tear may not be seen.

HIP LABRUM OSSIFICATION

  • Labral ossification is a degenerative process and is not common.

  • Look for ossification along the expected location and shape of the labrum.

  • The ossification can be patchy like in this example.

  • In the late stage when its very dense it may be difficult to differentiate from an osteophyte but the shape is helpful.
